Impact
of Covid-19 for Workers
The era of Covid-19 has affected
many aspects of human life, there are many impacts caused by Covid-19. In
addition to health, the Covid-19 era has also had an impact on the pace of the
economy and industry. Whereas the pace of the economy and industry in Indonesia
is a matter or activity that is very influential for the people themselves.
Thus, Covid-19 has also had a major impact on workers, including layoffs,
salary cuts, and increased unemployment.
The first impact on workers
caused several companies to reduce the number of workers so that they carried
out layoffs as an effort to prevent the spread of the Covid-19 disease. There
are 81% of the workers are not allowed
to work because the workplace are closed and not operating. According on the
Law of the Republic of Indonesia No. 13 of (2003) about employment, in
the event of termination of employment the company is required to pay severance
pay or service fees and compensation that should be received by the employee.
Syafrida, et al (2020) stated that
Overmacht/Force Majeur were layoffs by reason of compelling circumstances
carried out by the company due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Overmacht/Force Majeur
were circumstances that could not be known at the time the work agreement was
made. Therefore, because the COVID-19 pandemic does not last forever, layoffs
cannot be permanent and only last temporarily until COVID-19 is
reduced/disappeared.
In addition, Covid-19 has also
caused the company to experience a decrease in revenue. Andrew F. Sikula (2007)
states, “Salary is remuneration in the form of money received by employees as a
consequence of their status as employees who contribute to the achievement of
company goals”. The
amount of all cutting of salary is regulated in Article 65 PP 36/2021
concerning Wages which concludes that the company can impose a fine withholding
wages for its employees. The amount of salary deductions may not exceed half of
the salary received by workers. There are several things you can do to avoid
pay cuts, including: improve performance and quality.
Covid 19 causes structural
unemployment. Rosa,et al (2019) states that structural
unemployment is unemployment that arises because the skills demanded by
employers do not match the skills of job seekers, it means structural
unemployment occurs because the number of jobs available in some labor markets
is not sufficient to provide jobs for job seekers. Usually this type of work is
long term. Many jobs have reduced the number of workers in order to survive
this pandemic, so the availability of available jobs is decreasing. According
to the Indonesian Minister of Manpower, Suharso, revealed an increase in
unemployment of 7.07 percent 138.22 million workforce in Indonesia. This figure
is equivalent to 9.77 million working age Suharso (2021). This means that
there are 9.77 million people who are unemployed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The government must also provide job training that can overcome this. However,
we need to be aware that the handling is not only from government policies, but
also from all of us Indonesian citizens.
We can see that the impact of
the Covid-19 era on workers is very real for our country. starting from
layoffs, cutting of salary, to rising unemployment which greatly affects
people's lives. A lot of things have changed since Covid-19. so let's help each
other together with a healthy way of life so that covid-19 passes soon, and for
workers affected by this covid-19 to always try to do new things and quickly
get back to work.
